Danah Boyd surprised me. She is not scared to say the truth. I think she really realizes the interest of young people for the new technology. The message she is giving to parents of teenagers is realistic: Internet is not bad. This is like hanging out with friend! It is like a public place where you can socialize, but the difference is that everybody can see all interactions you have with others.
It made me smile when she made the differences between nowadays teenager and the one of the last generation. It proves that teenager will stay like they are even if they use social media! BUT, when she explains why this girl decorate her myspace a certain way, I'm not sure this is always a way to express themselves. I think that social media for certain person, is a way to be somebody else. They may not be the like they describe themselves on those site. I think we need to be careful.
I think, like Boyd, that MOST of teenagers are aware that everything that they post on website like 'Facebook and 'MySpace' can be seen by thousands of people. However, new user or immature teenagers can post things that can have very bad repercussions. Not everybody is aware that only few words can have huge repercussions. I know that some people, even teacher, lost their jobs because they posted pictures or wrote things not acceptable for their social status. Moreover, those people weren't that young!
I agreed with every words she said except for the part when she says that there is a social separation between 'MySpace' and 'Facebook'. I never heard that before and as a part of the new generation which grew with all the new technologies, I should have heard about that.
